The Resurrection Promise

Introduction

Christian hope is not built on vague ideas of the afterlife. It is built on resurrection. The Bible does not teach that eternity is a disembodied floating existence. It teaches that the dead will rise. The resurrection of Jesus is the foundation of that promise.

1. Jesus Is the Firstfruits

1 Corinthians 15:20

“But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.”

The word firstfruits means:

He rose first — and others will follow. His resurrection was not symbolic.

  • It was physical.
  • It was real.
  • It was the beginning.

2. The Resurrection of Believers

Jesus said:

John 6:40

“And this is the will of him that sent me… that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.”

Believers are not promised escape from death. They are promised resurrection through it.

3. There Will Be a Resurrection for All

Scripture teaches that resurrection is not limited to believers.

John 5:28–29

“All that are in the graves shall hear his voice…”

There will be:

  • Resurrection unto life

  • Resurrection unto judgment

Resurrection is universal.
Eternal outcome is not.

4. What Kind of Body?

Paul explains:

1 Corinthians 15:42–44

“It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption…”

Our future bodies will be:

  • Imperishable

  • Glorified

  • Powerful

  • Spiritual (not meaning non-physical, but Spirit-empowered)

Jesus’ resurrected body is the model.

  • He was recognizable.
  • He could be touched.
  • Yet He was glorified.

5. Why Resurrection Matters

Without resurrection:

  • Death wins

  • Sin wins

  • Hope collapses

Paul says:

1 Corinthians 15:17

“If Christ be not raised, your faith is vain…”

But He was raised.

Therefore:

  • Death is defeated

  • The grave is temporary

  • The relationship continues into restored creation

6. The Final Victory

1 Corinthians 15:54–55

“Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting?”

The resurrection promise is not wishful thinking. It is rooted in the historical resurrection of Jesus. Because He lives, we will live.

Teaching Summary

The resurrection promise teaches that death is not the final state. Just as Christ rose bodily from the grave, all people will be raised. For those who belong to Him, resurrection leads to eternal life in restored creation.

Christian hope is rooted in resurrection. This teaching explains how Christ’s resurrection guarantees the future rising of all people.
